Housekeeping over the years

Saturday, August 8, 2020

Housekeeping drove me crazy over the years. I knew homes need to be clean. I've never been the person to love that chore. In College, I learned that Saturday was the best day to clean my room. I did not have a roommate, so I cleaned the place for myself. I also washed my clothes on Saturdays after my break from work.

When I graduated, I shared a duplex with a roommate. She was there first, so the rules were: no dishes in the sink overnight, and we each clean the entire place (except for the other's room) the other month.

When I graduated, I lived in a tiny little place. 6 months later I was married to the love of my life and I guess that's when I officially become responsible for the housekeeping of an entire family.

Before the kids were born, it was tough. My major problem was with paperwork. One weekend, I decided to organize everything, one hour at a time. I even wrote about it. I called "the power of one hour." Here is a before and after photo of my results.

Organizing that paperwork gave me encouragement to know that I could conquer that major issue with clutter. What I didn't know then was that cleaning and organizing a home takes time and effort.

Sometimes, you just don't have a lot of time. But things need to be done anyway. I remember starting a new job in my now new hometown. While I was job searching, I spent time cleaning, organizing things, cooking, taking care of the family, and volunteering at church. Once I started working full-time, I had little time for cleaning. I needed to clean anyway.

I learned to prioritize my projects. I knew from past experience that when everything is chaotic, I need to start with laundry and food. That's how you go from overwhelmed to organized. I did that a lot. When I was chronically busy, I made sure there was food on the table and the laundry was done. These two simple chores helped me to properly care for the family, myself, and make progress with everything else I had going on.

I learned that sometimes, you just do not have time to invest in organizing things. I wrote a blog post with creative ways to organize your home. I used one of the strategies last week. A few weeks ago, I had a few service people at our house often. I had 3 clothes hampers filled with clothes day after day outside of our laundry room. I decided that the service people did not need to see those hampers week after week so, I decided to store them in the linen closet. I  used the strategies of "hide some stuff" and "ignore it until you can do something about it." Hiding made the space look cleaner. Ignoring the issue helped me wait until I had time to take care of the problem.

Well, I had some extra time last week and I was able to completely take care of those 3 clothes hampers.

A second issue I had was the thought that if I only had help, housekeeping will be easier. I've had seasons when I was doing everything by myself as a stay-at-home mom. I've had occasional help as a SAHM. I also had seasons when I was working full-time and cleaning full-time. I also know what it means to work full time and have the help of a housekeeper. Housekeeping never got easier: I got smarter.

I found smart solutions, whether I had help or not. I made peace with repeating those strategies over and over again. I also learned to teach those strategies to the kids. Their help has made a world of difference.

Housekeeping used to drive me crazy. I have learned which strategies I need to succeed.

Reassessing my Goals

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

I gave a lot of thought on how this year would be different than the last. There are things I can't predict or control. As a matter of fact, if you follow me on Twitter you read me tweet that 'Control is an illusion.' So, what are the things I can count on? Hopes, dreams and more concrete things such as goals. You've heard me talk about my goal of running 3 5Ks. This is where that goal materialized for the first time.

I wrote this on the last week of December of 2010 in Mississippi
I jot down 4 goals for 2011 in a piece of paper and took them pretty seriously. It dawned on me today that they are all related to what I call my minimum.
Exercising 4 times a week has really worked for me. I have worked out 6 times a week but most weeks I exercise around 5. Even in busy weeks I plan to get out there. One trick I have is to tell people I'm gonna do it then I tell them what I did. I feel like it helps me a bit with accountability.
I ran my three 5Ks. I gave myself the July deadline, which helped a lot with this goal. I am currently looking for another fitness challenge.
I have not arrived at my goal weight. As a matter of fact, I haven't given you an update since I wrote this post. I have been calling them Life After Baby: Weight Loss Update but I'm gonna wrap this up soon cause the baby is now a toddler who's been walking since she turned 9 months. What I learned along the way was surprisingly refreshing:
1. Tackling extra weight as soon as the fog lifted and I was able to manage my life easily is a great idea. Notice I didn't call it baby weight cause there's no scientific term for this or is there?
2. Renewing my mind constantly is a must if I want to be successful.
3. Enjoy the process. I have been enjoying this journey since day one. I couldn't wait to enjoy life when I arrived at a certain place. Those around me highly benefit from my attitude towards life and I am aware.
I am not known for my amazing skills in the kitchen but I am the main cook around here. My last goal was not to get bored with food and I constantly work on trying to improve that. Planning meals and executing what I planned helps everyone to eat healthy and balanced meals. I happy to say that this summer the kids have been getting fruits they never tasted and loving it. They're more conservative with their main meals (they really love oatmeal, rice, beans..) but little by little I'm adding variety to it.

I hope you're not discouraged. Don't look at your goals as a sign of condemnation but as a beacon of hope. You can achieve your goals. It's time to reassess, add more fun to it and make your goals achievable.
I believe today can be the day you give the first step towards your finish line. I believe I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I believe I can count on goals to guide me encourage me along the day. Have you thought about your goals lately?

De molho

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Ontem eu fui no médico pra minha consulta.

Graças a Deus deu tudo certo. O meu esposo tomou conta do bebê e no último dia levei o bebê comigo. Matei as saudades.

Boa semana!

Changing Table Matters
Vacation was awesome. The Little Prince did okay in the car seat, slept well and only complained when there was something wrong. We took several breaks from the trip but we all really needed them. It was nice to stop and see family along the way til we got to Mississippi.
One thing I noticed were businesses that did and did not have changing tables in their establishments. I don't want to bash anyone here and I won't. It sure is nice to use changing tables in public bathrooms tough. I usually put a receiving blanket under my baby just to keep it a little cleaner for him. When we went to places that did not have changing tables, we just changed him inside of our car. For most of our family it was their first time seeing my baby. They couldn't get enough of him, it was really sweet.

Household Matters
The worse thing about coming back from vacation is unpacking. Worse than that, not having time to unpack. Now that I'm staying at home with the Little Prince, unpacking is just part of life. We were pretty organized and got a lot of clothes washed while at my in-laws but I decided to wash everything again with the proper baby wash liquid.

My husband fixed the vacuum cleaner (thanks Zeke!). I suspected that the thing was spreading dust around because the dirt wasn't going to the front cleaner part of our vacuum cleaner. This is one of the things I don't even want to learn how to do. The other thing I said I didn't want to learn was how to cut the grass. I googled it, went outside and learned (not well enough to be envied but just so our yard doesn't look at the Amazon forest when my husband has a super busy week). It seems that after we got rid of major paperwork, it's easier to keep the house clean.

Solid Food Matters
My baby was introduced to his first food: oatmeal. If you have been a long time reader you know I love and believe in oatmeal. I bought rice cereal but because of my biased attitude we introduced oatmeal first. He didn't know what to think of it at first, he pushed it away, touched it and sucked his fingers (which convinced me that he thought oatmeal grew out of his thumb)... it was a nice try, now it's up to me to keep it in his diet til he gets used to it. It wasn't a long time ago we were feeding him with formula and breast milk. Time does go by fast. Here's a photo for you.

Weight Loss Plan: Gradual

Saturday, May 16, 2009

I was looking at my e-mail and I got a great article from WebMD's Weight Loss Wisdom Newsletter called 8 tips for losing weight after pregnancy. You can read the whole thing here.
My Highlights:
* Be patient with yourself and don't compare yourself to celebrities - I've blogged several times about that. Celebrities do things that normal people can't afford because their bodies are their money maker and they have tons of help from trainers, plastic surgery, chefs, you name it. Some say that patience is a virtue, I say that patience is developed (patience is part of the fruit of the Spirit). We all have it, some like me need to develop it more than others.
* Go back to eating healthy and eating for hunger - I was thinking about this today! I've been so tired that I confuse that feeling with hunger and they are not the same. My feeling of hunger changed with pregnancy but now it's back to normal. I just need to be aware of it during these first weeks of adjustment before I can really tackle my old habits of tracking food and exercise.
* Exercise, drink water, get some rest - There's not that many new concepts in weight loss regardless if you just had a baby or not. The results will come the same way: eat less calories which have great nutrition and move your body. Drinking water is very important as well. I've been doing that and I'm thankful to God the good habit has been established for a while.

Weight loss after baby number one has been gradual and will continue to be. I lost weight gradually before and it really worked for me. I learned a lot the first time around and I'm looking forward to learning more now. I have a friend who keeps saying 'give up (on weight management)? Never!' and I totally agree.
Patience has been my number one friend right now in various areas of life, weight management included. During this season I can see what concepts have stayed with me and where do I need to improve. Do I need to work on portion control? Do I have the exercise thing going and working for me in my new season of life? Am I able to enjoy where I am on the way to where I am going? What's the use of being unhappy and miserable because my pre-pregnancy body is not back? It won't be back exactly as it was. I had a c-section, my belly stretched like never before... I kind of have a new body and it's okay, I have a healthy and blessed child who came into the world through it.
I plan on competing on a 5K in a few months and I'm looking forward to starting to train again. This is the season for races and there are plenty to choose from. I believe that competing will also help me with my goal and it will give me a great sense of accomplishment. And to think that LP was in my belly during my first 5K... Wow.
I have on my thinking cap today and I want to rely on patience while I get to my pre-pregnancy weight and keep going down - yep, sister girl is ambitious about her health.
I start walking again next week. I feel like it's time. I won't run for a while but I look forward to start walking again.
Totally unrelated note: I'm digging Luther Vandross songs today. I like them every day but today is Luther day at the house :) here are a few of my favs:

Have an awesome weekend everyone!

5 meses!

Oi pessoal! Prontos pro ano novo? Eu estou dizendo adeus ano velho e feliz ano novo! So vi de longe.
E tudo tao novo e cada dia me traz muita alegria. Esse bebe e um presente de Deus.
Ontem eu voltei pra academia.
Falando no feriado, nao tenho nenhum plano. A minha faz jejum no inicio do mes.
Sabado e meu aniversario, vou fazer 29 anos. E tao engracado nascer no inicio do ano porque a data vem e vai e a maioria das vezes qdo me perguntam ja passou.
Bem, feliz ano novo.

You can Change!

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

O que eu aprendi ate agora...
What I've learned so far...
* Mude devagar so assim as mudancas vao durar mais.
* Change slowly so that your changes will last. To lose 100 pounds in 5 weeks is challenging. Many people not only put on the weight back and plus.
Descubra a razao porque vc come muito. E stress? Falta do que fazer? Uma tristeza que vc tem por anos? Medo? Solidao? Se vc nao resolver a raiz do problema, o problema vai voltar.
* Change your mind first, then your body. Learn the reasons why you overeat. Is it stress? Boredom? A sadness you've had for years? Fear? Loneliness? If you don't cut the root of the problem it will surely return.
* Learn to enjoy exercises. Find something you like. Why take on rowing if there are no lakes close to your house? Find something accessible that you like.
* Don't think about what you are losing when you change your lifestyle but think about what you are going to gain. Many people are blindly in love with sweets that they don't see that fruits are not only delicious but they have tons of nutrients.
* Accept your mistakes. No one is perfect so to have perfect days always are perfect recepis for lack of motivation. Forgive yourself. Give it another try the next day or better, during the next meal.
* Aprenda com os seus erros. Vc nao erra porque e mau, vc erra pra aprender. Eu ja errei muito em feriados. Hoje eu sei o que devo e o que nao devo fazer.
* Learn with your mistakes. You don't make mistakes because you are bad, you make mistakes to learn. I have made many mistakes during holidays. Today I know what not to do.
* Stop comparing yourself with others. Don't feel bad if someone is losing weight faster than you are. Each one of us have a jorney to follow. You are an unique individual, there is no other body who functions just like yours. Remember that you are special and rare. Have patience with yourself and see how much you'll learn.
* Don't be ashamed of your appearance. God loves you and He has given you the ability to change. Take lots of before pictures because you will be a different person inside and out at the end of your journey.
* Aprenda a relaxar e aproveitar a vida.
* Learn how to relax and enjoy life. Life is more than food and drinks (or the limiting of them). One of the reasons why we change our lifestyle is so that we can live a healthier, more abundant life. Don't wait until you lose weight to enjoy life. Remember that time doesn't stop.

Goals
{1} To burn at least 2,000 calories (15.8 to go out of 26 miles; 1 training for 5K out of 3)
{2} To get protein and dairy daily in my diet.
{3} Focus on behavior change, not on the numbers on the scale. Haven't touched the scale for 8 days, 13 more to go.

The Root Cause for Weight Gain

Sunday, August 3, 2008

“We’ve come a long way” is the title of a song a lady used to sing in my previous church. This title can describe my health journey. Thank God we’ve come a long way and we are more than conquerors!
This lovely weekend I took the time to look at the binder where I keep all of my articles, worksheets and other things I used on my weight management class and visits with a health educator.
It seems that a year ago I had problems eating a variety of foods and vegetables. I’m glad to announce this is not a problem anymore. By writing down a menu for the week as well as being drawn into different fruits and vegetables in the store, we have cut this problem down.
I also saw that I had tons of problems with stress. The Lord has blessed me with more knowledge as well as experience in this area that may affect life. Christians are to pursue peace, seek after it. I thought it was something that fell from the sky. Either I reduce or totally eliminate stress in healthy ways. Glory be to God for this lesson.
I’ve learned a lot. Most of the focus this past year is not on food. I think that was actually what hurt be in my 10 attempts to lose weight. Too much focus on food. When I have relationship problems I tend to walk to the kitchen. One time I stopped myself and said ‘what are you doing? You’re not even hungry!’ does this work every time? No. But thank God the awareness that food is not the solution is there.
I am aware that there is a danger in keeping total focus on food or exercise only. Stress may be the root cause for weight gain (I’ve written about developing a healthy root system here). Anxiety may be the cause for weight gain. Health problems may cause it. The holiday season gets blamed a lot for weight gain. Let me challenge you with the following: sometimes we try to eat our way out of boredom, awkwardness or avoidance when surrounded by family memories and old memories of the past.
An inanimate food (we hope the turkey will be completely dead on Thanksgiving LOL) does not call your name saying “Cintia! Eat me baby! You know you want my delicious thigh!” We are the ones drawn to illicit amounts of apple pie because the high given by sugar is supposed to numb the pain of rejection, not feeling accepted, not feeling supported or loved.
Stop accepting the lie and seek the truth. I had to seek the Truth and Jesus set me free. I didn’t like myself. I ate through anxiety, uncertainty, stress and you name it. My late night visits to Arby’s did help me gain the pounds but the root cause for weight gain wasn’t their grilled chicken combo with jalapeno poppers and sweet tea.
I’ve come a long way. God has held my hand and brought me this far by faith. I’m not the same person. God changed my mind first and it took at least 2 years for this to happen. It wasn’t until last year, after my mind was renewed to love the God kind of love that I was able to start my physical transformation.
It started on the mind. I no longer look in the mirror and see a fat woman. I see the righteousness of God in Christ, I see a beloved, beautiful daughter of God who has a purpose and an awesome destiny looking back at me.
It’s not all about food or a number of pounds. I’ve come a long way, leaning on the Lord because He is my source. I want to challenge you to pray for revelation of your root cause for weight gain.
Remember that God is ready to bring change in your life because He loves you for who you are.

Just say YES

Friday, August 1, 2008

Today was one of those days where I didn't feel like getting out and exercising. I'm almost never at home, I work a lot, I've worked out this week... Excuses tend to pile sometimes BUT I just said YES. 37 minutes later I was back at home and I had a great work out around the hood. Eve the fastest runners in the gym tell me they also dread getting there but that's the most difficult thing: to make a decision to do something. Today I had to make the decision to walk out of the door. Some times the major decision is to pack my clothes so I can use them at the gym. Other days I have to make the decision not to overeat because it's just not worth it. Have you thought about saying YES to a big decision that will benefit your health today?
I thought about something else that I'm not sure if just saying YES will fix. I have never had a treadmill. I'd love to have one. I'd certainly use it and maybe my husband would use it too. For now, it makes sense to pay for gym membership and go there as many times as I'd like. If one of their machines breaks, it's fixed the next time I show up. They keep the machines clean, they teach you how to use them, they have tons of televisions available so you can watch it and I get to see lovely people I know as well as watch senior citizen women trying to pick up young bucks (now, that's funny). I have thought about saving to buy a treadmill and it makes sense. I lose all the other exercise machines, the sauna, the swimming pool, the hot tub, the awesome classes, the weights... I also lose the people and the discount on my health education classes. If things change in a way where it makes sense to have a home gym, I'll definately buy a treadmill. I'm into running and that will be great. Maybe I'll buy some weights too but for now, it's great to go to the gym.

We are going out to eat some this weekend. We hardly ever go out to eat together. I avoid because of the sodium in foods, because of the prices (I can save so much eating in) and because of the concern of how foods are made (too much trans fats anyone?). Putting all of that aside, it's still enjoyable to go out on dates where food is involved. We have found so many different foods we never tried before because of dates. We try to stay away from all American food and definately go international. Thai and Indian are favs. We also love cusina latina and some good Asian food. In the mornings we love going to bakeries and eating fresh baked bread or pastries. We know that we just can't eat out all the time. Growing up in Brasil we didn't eat out that much. It was a very special occcasion when we did and I didn't think anything of it. My mom cooks so well that it's a sad thing to give up her food for someone else's (I'm serious). Now that we are grown we eat out when we want to give the cooks a break. My family is full of great cooks and it's just a joy to let them do their thing in the kitchen. I love family get togethers in Brasil!!!! I miss being there but I'm thankful to God for the life I have here in the States.

Once things change I too will spend more time in the kitchen. Right now, sister girl does the best she can: cooking foods ahead of time and having homemade stuff throughout the week.

I hope you enjoy your weekend. Say YES to things that will add to your health and think about things you want to change. You will get there, one step at the time, one pound at the time.

SUMMER IS HERE!

Friday, June 20, 2008

Summer is finally here!!! I've been acting like it's been here but now it really is. I really would like to go hiking more often (this explains the photo used here). I'm all about day trips or trips that will take a few hours because I'm a starter. There are several groups in the area, I guess joining them would be wise. We'll see. Oh, check this out, there's a magazine about backpacking out there - there are magazines about ANYTHING out there. Go print press!
This week was good. I can stand on my own legs today - great sign. I'm going back to Body Blasters (BB) today. They added 15 more minutes to the class cause it's Friday I guess. I can use every minute of it. If you'd be really close to me, you'd hear my prayers of thanksgiving to God every time we finish doing something I consider difficult. I thank Him for the strength to do it.
I'm really thinking about traning for a 5K. That's the next big challenge for me. I went as far as finding a race in the early Fall. Of course I'll keep you posted. My husband said he'd think about traning as well. Now, for our whole family to run together? That would be huge! I think he'd really enjoy it as well. Enjoy your first day of summer!

Cintia Takes Control of Her Health

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

Name: Simply Cintia
Age: 27 and fabulous
Starting Weight: 182 lbs
Eliminated Weight: 161.1 lbs
Hometown: Paradise, NC
Status: Happily Married
Occupation: Christian Communication Specialist

1.) What was your big turning point that made you realize you needed to lose weight? My turning point came when I realized that none of my clothes - that were already 2 sizes larger than normal - fit me. I was also very tired after going up stairs and I didn’t feel very good about myself. I think I also did it for health reasons because my blood pressure was kind of high.
2.) What is one thing you wish you had known before going on The Weight Management Program? How many calories I was really eating when I chose fast food. I thought I was making a healthy choice by getting a chicken sandwich…
3.) If you could have done one thing differently during the program what would it be? I would have eaten more desserts. They were included in the program but I decided to go cold turkey. I also would not have been afraid of the scale like I was every week.
4.) What do you think your biggest weight-loss obstacles will be now? Fitting exercise on my daily schedule is a constant challenge. I also have to watch out for stress eating. I’m not really on my own so that helps. Having at least monthly monitoring from a health educator is very beneficial.
5.) What advice can you give other people who are hoping to lose extra pounds? It takes getting your mind changed before you see the pounds leaving your body for good. The opposite can happen but if your mind is not changed they usually creep back in. I would pray and ask God’s help before deciding how to eat and exercise. God has the perfect plan that will work for your good.
6.) What is one thing that happens behind-the-scenes that no one would know from reading your blog? I actually have a real life. Weight management doesn’t dominate my life, it’s just something I choose to write about. My blog used to be called “Cintia and Food” because it was all about my relationship with food. Now I call it “Simply Cintia” because I have found freedom in Christ to live an abundant life that is much more than counting calories and exercising. Because God has set me free from the bondage of being too weight and self-conscious, I can enjoy all areas of life. I am God conscious now.

happy Friday to you!

Today it's been a great day so far. I woke up early but I felt sleepy when I saw my husband asleep in the room. He ended up waking up and we got on the road. I had been shopping for 'fun' house things - trash can liners, laundry detergent... - and I decided to look around at other stores. I had to go to a beauty supply to buy more oil for my hair and a new comb and next door was a women's clothing store. I had not been there for years. I used to go there every week when I was in college. When I smelled the perfums, I remember the stuff I used to wear in college. The prices were low but I realize I'm a new person now, I require new fragrances. I'm not a snob. When it comes to perfumes I have developed a new sense of the scents I wear. The stuff I like might cost more but nothing compares to the feeling of smelling like a million bucks when you leave home. My number one, favorite scent so far in life: Dolcce & Gabbana. I haven't had a bottle of that in a while but when the time is right I'll get one. I guess the last good deal I saw was in NY. After going through the perfumes I went to the sale racks. I don't care where I am, I always check them. I believe in paying full price for some things but if there's something good on sale, sister girl is going to grab it - and remember the deal forever. Moving to the clothes rack, I found a great looking skirt for $5.99. I got a size smaller than I had been buying in the beginning of the weight management program and it fit! It actually looked great! I couldnt' remember having that feeling in a while. My husband told me I could have had it all along but it's hard to feel good about yourself when your mind is in bondage. Zeke always taught me that you can look and feel good about yourself, no matter what your size is. I believed it for a while but deep inside I kept feeling that was the wrong size for me. As I've said before, I'm on a journey. I can't let the holidays spoil months on this journey. With Christ I can do all things. I still have a while to go but with Christ I can. I also can enjoy myself on the way to where I am going. I'm certain the skirt I got today will be too big for me one day, just like the pants I have on now. For now I'm enjoying my life. For now I'm staying encouraged. What about you?

Combating Stress Eating

Thursday, November 1, 2007

These are helpful tips I learned in a class yesterday. Let’s start with the definition of Stress: non-specific response to a perceived threat.
* Stress eating works AGAINST YOU when it comes to our health goals;
* Strategies: change patterns. I normally would overeat by having seconds and thirds. Now I’m going to measure everything and GO for a walk after my meals.
* When we stress we lose our perspective. Ask yourself: what do you really need?
* If you practice talking walks, taking deep breaths, etc when you don’t need it, you’ll be more likely to success in crunch times.
* Make food choices mindful. Set expectations for other people and for yourself AHEAD OF TIME.
* Homework: Write down some of the situations that bring about stress and write alternatives. E.g. When I’m bored I could: take a walk, write, read, visit a friend.
* While making changes, learn to tolerate mistakes.

Desafios diarios

Eu tinha tanta paz naquela epoca!

Yesterday I changed my eating plan to the food pyramid one. My instructor told me no matter where we start (we have 3 choices) we need to end in the food pyramid. Thank God I have changed my lifestyle to a healthy one for almost 2 months. Lessons I’ve learned so far? The scale is the least reliable component in this race. May I dare to tell you that you might not need a scale but twice, in the beginning and the end of the journey. I know that’s challenging and that’s something I’m moving towards. Back at home we didn’t have a scale in the house, we just weighed ourselves at the doctor’s office or in the pharmacy. I had so much more peace! Focusing on your daily choices and controlling your environment brings more stability to the whole process in my experience. What I do everyday, how much I exercise, how many fruits and veggies I consume, how often I allow myself to indulge on desserts, how much peace I have inside, how often I look on my scale, all of these things add up to my quality of life. This is not about looking better, it’s about living a better life. I live a better life and I thank God because He gave an abundant life to me through Jesus Christ. Stay encouraged. You can do all things through Christ.
