Summer Health Challenge Week 6

Monday, July 1, 2024

Summer of 2022
Listen to the Podcast episode here

I can't believe these are the last 4 weeks of this challenge! I learned a lot since week 1 and I made significant progress toward my goal of consistency.

I decided to look back to where I was one year ago so I can better see where I am.

• June was a busy month. We had a lot of major activities and I was glad to support my family and our guests.

• We are nearing summer travel time. We are all looking forward to that after a busy month.

• This summer I developed a greater awareness of my feelings because of the journaling aspect of the Ranting Weight Watcher's Redemption Group. Last year I was journaling once a week. My feelings got the best of me, especially in July. This summer I am proficient at not using feelings as an excuse to eat needless food.

• This summer I got better at turning down desserts. Last year I was eating a lot more processed desserts. I ate (and baked) desserts this year but the difference is, I planned for the desserts I enjoyed.

• Reflection works. Journaling once a day really helps me to face the facts and make a decision on how to proceed.

• I am very happy with the results I got this month. No wonder it is working: I am doing what I said I was going to do which is:

10-week Challenge:

• Weigh/track/measure foods
• Stop eating after dinner
• Complete 50 workouts *
• Sleep at least 7 hours a night *
• Drink at least 40 oz water + electrolytes *

* Adapt these to your level of fitness, current needs
Start: 5/20
End: 7/29

Back to WW: Last week's wins

Wednesday, December 20, 2023

Whether I lose or gain weight, I try to reflect on my week. I gained 1.3 lbs last week. I decided to think about last week. Here is what I observed:

• I went to CrossFit quite a bit. I love lifting weights. I was able to attend two classes.

• I ran three times last week. One of those runs was a 10-mile long run on Saturday.

• I made good food choices most of the time. I prioritized salmon and greens when eating out. I made a protein and oatmeal waffle on Saturday. I need to batch cook those because I enjoy them so much.

• A few of my family members were recovering from ear infections and seasonal things of that nature. I was blessed to be able to take care of everyone. One of my reasons for gratitude is the health to live the life God is calling me to live. Hallelujah.

• I baked quite a bit and sent baked goods to the kids' school and my husband's job.

• I finished my Christmas shopping.

• I simplified a few seasonal things I wanted to do. It took all I had but I am sticking with "simplifying" my life.

• I went to the store and bought all we needed for the week.

I could go on. I realized that even with the gain, I'm at my lowest weight of the year. I'm also more fit than ever. I ran half marathons before but my strength game has completely improved in the past 3 years. I'm grateful.

I won the "spirit" award during my CrossFit's Christmas party. I was so surprised and grateful. I've been calling it the "Holy Spirit" Award. LOL. I love my CrossFit crew so much. They really help me be better every day.

Next week is my last weigh-in of the year and the last one of the holiday season. The first weigh-in of the year will be on my birthday. My goal is to execute the holiday plan and to see awesome results.

Starting weight: 175 lbs
This week's weight: 155.8 lbs (-19.2)

First Goal: 153.4 lbs (-2.4)

Second Goal: 146 lbs (-9.8)
Final Goal: 136 lbs (-19.8)

"A goal properly set is halfway reached." - Anonymous

Summer is the perfect time to set health goals. At least it is for me. The pace of life changes a little bit. Because the kids are not in school, my mornings are freer. It is easier to exercise outdoors during the summer. A variety of summer vegetables, herbs, and fruit are available this time of year. What's not to love about these benefits?

We all have been trying to invest in our health since the beginning of the year. How do we remain motivated or regain motivation? Summer health challenges are one to motivate yourself.

Here is how my challenge works:

• I set two behavior goals
• I also set a weight loss goal for the next two months

Then I start working on both of these things. Very simple. But let's dig deeper.

I decided to ask myself, "Where do you want to be one month from now? How about two months from now?" I had a number in mind. I also know that numbers do not drive lasting change. Changing my behavior will for sure get me there.

Because two months feel like a long time, consider the last 48 hours of my life (or 2 days). I was able to lose *0.4 lbs. How did that happen exactly?

• I saw a weight on the scale I didn't care for.
• I asked, "What do I want to achieve in two days?"
• I reflected on which actions, would give me the results I wanted. Here are a few actions:

Action: Eat nutrient-dense foods
- Write a menu
- Go to grocery store
- Prep the food
- Pack the food
- Take the food to work
- Enjoy the food

Action: Drink 3,000 ML of water
- Take my 3,000 ML water bottle back to work
- Add mint to the bottle
- Add water to the bottle
- Drink the water

Action: Exercise **5 days
- Do laundry
- Separate 5 days' worth of gym clothes
- Set the alarm clock
- Sign up for the class in advance
- Go to bed early

I am a believer that properly setting goals will always lead me to where I want to go.

This challenge is not about perfection. It is about doing what I can (write down my food, drink all the water, etc.) with what I have.

If you want to join me, please feel free! I want to know what your goal is and more importantly, what are the two actions you chose?

I will give you an update in 4 weeks and another one in 8 weeks. Here's to setting better goals as we achieve better things.

* weight fluctuates. This is not a formula. Consult your doctor before starting a weight management program and an exercise program.

** I've been building the number of days I exercise for the past 15 years. Some people do more, others less. The key thing is to do what works for you.

*** This post is for entertainment purposes only. I'm not a medical or exercise professional.

Quick fix: summer body

Wednesday, May 17, 2023

'Tis the season of quick fixes. The summer is in 35 days. What a lot of people do is get desperate and ask themselves: how can I get the best results with the least effort?

I don't blame them. Working smarter is a thing. The problem is when we have to keep starting and restarting our health journeys. Talk about frustration.

A common barrier is the number of holidays between now and the summer. After Mother's day, there is Father's day, memorial day, and independence day. Don't forget about Juneteenth, family birthdays, and summer vacation.

How in the world am I expected to say in shape with all of these things going on in my life?

The problem with quick fixes and desperation is that the results may not be long-lasting.

I'm not sure about you but when I'm desperate, my decision-making ability decreases. The decisions I make in a stressed estate are not the same as the decisions I make with a calm mind and clear heart.

I've been there too. I didn't like how my clothes were fitting so I'd look up the quickest, most ridiculous diet on the internet.

I never received lasting results from such approaches. Looking back, I wish I asked myself the following question: What will this approach cost my body and pocket?

A lot of "miraculous" solutions are pricey. Starving my body is costly. Spending hundreds of dollars to damage my body and mind is a price I am no longer willing to pay.

Six years ago I decided to go on a solo health journey. The journey would give me more than a "summer body," I gained the satisfaction of never having to look for a quick-fix solution because I was able to finally figure out how to live a healthy lifestyle continuously.

When you live from fix to fix, it takes a minute to realize what true freedom looks like. In my case, a corporation didn't give me this. Plans and programs are tools. I'm the one responsible for the results I obtained.

I recorded a podcast giving you more details on my solo health journey. You can listen to it here

If like me, you are too tired to try another expensive program again, listen to the podcast and reach out. Freedom is closer than you know. It is also free of charge because you hold the key.

The Ultimate Guide to Weight Loss

Friday, May 12, 2023

Losing weight can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. With a little planning and effort, you can reach your weight loss goals and improve your overall health.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Set realistic goals. Don't try to lose too much weight too quickly. Aim to lose 1-2 pounds per week.
  2. Make small changes to your diet. Start by making small changes to your diet, such as cutting out sugary drinks or eating more fruits and vegetables.
  3. Be more active. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
  4. Find a support system. Having a support system can help you stay motivated and on track. This could be a friend, family member, or weight loss group.
  5. Don't give up. Weight loss is a journey, not a destination. There will be setbacks along the way, but don't give up. Just keep going and you will eventually reach your goals.

Here are some additional tips to help you lose weight and keep it off:

  • Track your progress. Keeping track of your weight, food intake, and exercise can help you stay on track. There are many different ways to track your progress, such as using a food journal or fitness tracker.
  • Make it a lifestyle change. Weight loss is not a temporary fix. It's a lifestyle change. Make changes to your diet and exercise habits that you can stick with for the long term.
  • Be patient. Losing weight takes time and effort. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results immediately. Just keep going and you will eventually reach your goals.

Losing weight can be a challenge, but it's worth it. By following these tips, you can improve your health and quality of life.

Stress management techniques

Friday, March 18, 2022

Listen to this episode here:

For years, chewing was how I managed stress. I never thought I would find tools to manage stress outside of food but I did. The day it happened was right after lunch. I was in the middle of the most stressful situation I am yet to experience as a professional.

Everything happened fast and I had to act. There was no food around. All I had was a bottle of water. So I drank it. I faced the source of my stress. When it was all over, it felt like I woke up from a nightmare. My face felt like a bunch of people hit it really hard. My heart was steadfast although hurt. My soul was going to be okay.

When I think about that day, I noticed that I went through everything without the help of food. I was surprised I had that ability. What a discovery!

That awful day gave me the confidence that I can manage stress without food. Ever since then, I decided to add to the list of stress management techniques. Here are some stress management techniques that work for me.

Please know that my goal is to tell you to try the ones that work for you. I also want to tell you that people out there are biased towards certain techniques. If what other people are pushing does not work for you, keep trying the techniques that will give you the freedom you need.

Prayer - I often start with prayer because God hears and answers. There are a lot of Scriptures about praying during stressful times. Philippians 4:6-7 is a good one: "do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Bible Reading - My mind lines up with God's words when I read my Bible. My perspective changes. My spirit is encouraged and my stress really decreases.

Books - I remember being so stressed one day and telling myself 'go to the public library.' The fact of being surrounded by books was encouraging. I found a few new books to read. I felt relaxed as I learned new things.

Journaling - This is my go-to technique for times of stress. I simply write whatever comes to my mind. I often use journaling to empty my heart of worry. I list the things that are concerning me. It is easier to be more factual about the source of my stress after I journal.

Question - I recently learned to ask questions when I feel stressed. I simply say "oh, I feel stressed. I wonder why I feel this way." Once I figure out the why, I can conscientiously find a solution. If the "why" is out of my control, I look for smart ways to find a solution for the stress.

Crochet - I learned to crochet as a child. I worked on it when I was so stressed out, I was not functioning really well. The counting, the repetitive movement proved soothing. Having a final project was nice too. It did look like a kid worked on it but who cares, my stress was gone.

Exercise - Regular exercise is a stress reducer. I firmly believe that when you are stressed, you shouldn't shy away from exercise.  Exercise clears my mind and helps me to get ready for whatever the day has to offer. There are multiple sources of research that prove that exercise is a great solution to combat stress.

Go for a walk - I heard someone say that God gave us joints so we can move our bodies. Walking is a natural way we can move our bodies and manage stress. I am not saying you need to walk across America. Even if you decide to walk outside and take a deep breath, you will be free from some of what's weighing on you. Start small and add to your steps. Find a new place or a familiar path. Whatever you do, just walk.

Talk to a friend - Friendship is God's way to help us manage stress. The simple act of sitting down and talking to a friend adds a lot of joy to our days. I can't tell you how many times I would be so stressed in the morning. By the time I came back from seeing a friend, the stress was completely gone. You don't have to talk about what's bothering you if you don't want to. You do have to show up and talk.

Go to counseling - Counseling is a great way to discover tools for healthy living. Every time I go, listen and do the work, I rise stronger and better.

Take deep breaths - This was the first stress management strategy my father ever taught me. It works. There's nothing weird about it. You just take a few deep breaths and keep going.

Rest - When you are already busy, how do you get more rest? Start small by incrementally adding 15 minutes to the hours you sleep at night. Instead of browsing mindlessly, mindfully taking 15 minutes to take a screen break. Rest is inner wealth and power. A rested mind can make better decisions during stressful seasons.

Watch a comedy - Laughter is great medicine during times of stress. I purposefully add laughter to stressful days. It may be a new comedy or something old that delights my heart. Stress is a malady, laughing helps.

Picnics - The kids and I created the habit of having picnics. We go to a park, sit and eat a few snacks. Sometimes we walk. The kids may go to the playground. Whatever is stressing me out may follow me to a picnic at the park but never stays long.

Music - I recently learned to create different song lists. I have one for running. Another for Christmas time. I even have one for times I need motivation. Think about uplifting music. Organize it in a song list so you can play it when your heart needs some comfort in the form of melody and lyrics.

Bake for others - Every time I share baked goods with others, my heart gets so uplifted. If I need to do something about others, baking is often a good choice. Baking for others often brings a smile to their faces. I sometimes take baked goods to a group of people. Baking is a way of showing others we care. Stress disappears when I bake, which is lovely.

Learn a foreign language - My brain takes a break from stressing when I learn a foreign language. I'm not sure if you thought about this as a stress management tool but it works for me.

Practice Gratitude - Steve Harvey said that gratitude is one of the most overlooked and key principles to success. I successfully use gratitude to manage stress. While I am not grateful for the source of my stress, I am grateful for so many things in my life. Expressing gratitude is an unexpected way to manage stress.

There are more techniques I could share but I encourage you to start your own list. I am thankful that chewing is no longer the only item on mine.

WW Story: the steps that got me here

Monday, March 14, 2022

I joined WW in 2010 after I had my second daughter. I loved everything about it. I lost around 30 lbs but our family couldn't afford the membership. After I cried my tears, I realized that I learned a lot from WW. So I kept doing what I learned. Because of that decision, I lost an extra 20 lbs.

I quickly got pregnant with my third daughter soon after. I knew I didn't want to gain a lot of extra weight during my pregnancy so I made sure to keep walking and I added a lot of veggies to most meals.

Once I had my daughter, I decided to start food journaling. I lost around 50 lbs simply following what I learned from WW.

You'd think I lived happily ever after. The problem was, although I was active (I was running marathons), I was using food to manage stress.

I tried to lose weight but I just couldn't. I told myself to do while I can and when I could afford it, I would rejoin WW.

November of 2017 was the month I finally was able to join WW. I was at 175 lbs. I was just so happy to have my online membership. I followed the plan as best as I could. I was losing very slowly.

What I didn't know was that because I was losing slow, I've been able to transform those new skills into well-established habits. What a victory. For the first time in a while, I was not gaining any weight back. I was on a steady trend to losing.

I'm 7 lbs away from goal. I'm ready to remain faithful to the steps that got me here.

My top 3 tips for WW success

1 • Find out why you are gaining weight. When I found out that I needed to learn how to manage stress, it was easier to establish and keep new wellness habits.
2 • Map your own road to success. I discover that if I track my meals, I succeed. I learned that activity helps and it adds a lot of quality to my life. I also learned that when I pre-package my meals, it is easier to get in my nutrition during busy weeks.
3 • Enjoy the journey. It takes time to lose weight: you might as well enjoy the journey. Patience is a good thing to befriend. Contentment allows me to enjoy where I am on the way to where I am going.

What I eat in a day

Breakfast

Overnight oats with PB, frozen berries and sugar-free syrup, coffee.

Lunch

Grilled chicken, broccoli, mixed veggies, black beans, baby potatoes.

Dinner

Grilled chicken salad.

Snacks

Berries, tangerines, unsweetened apple sauce, chocolate protein shake.

Discipline leads to freedom

Monday, February 28, 2022

Listen here:
I’ve been blogging for a long time. When I look at my blog posts from 19 years ago, I see that every time I apply discipline to my life, it leads me to success in my weight loss journey. How so? Let’s talk about that today at the Simply Cintia Podcast!

I appreciate you for listening to this episode:

Here’s the thing, I am really close to reaching my weight loss goal. The last time I checked, I am 9 pounds away from reaching my goal. I’ve been closer than that recently too. The beginning of the new year brought about some stressful situations. I handled them with homemade bread and large helpings of peanut butter. I have adjusted my eating habits and now I am even more determined to reach my goal. How am I planning to do that? I want to become more disciplined because discipline leads to freedom. Richard Foster says that Every discipline has its corresponding freedom.

“Every Discipline has its corresponding freedom. If I have schooled myself in the art of rhetoric, I am free to deliver a moving speech when the occasion requires it. Demosthenes was free to be an orator only because he had gone through the discipline of speaking above the ocean roar with pebbles in his mouth. The purpose of the Disciplines is freedom. Our aim is the freedom, not the Discipline. The moment we make the Discipline our central focus, we turn it into law and lose the corresponding freedom.” Richard Foster

Let’s unpack this statement:

If I want to give a good speech, I need to learn rhetoric. Here is where discipline shows up: I can picture Demosthenes going to the beach each day. He takes off his shoes so he can get close to the cold water. In his hand, he has a lot of pebbles. He chose the smoothest ones possible but nonetheless, these are pebbles and they are heavy. He puts one by one in his mouth until it is full.

The goal is to speak above the ocean roar with pebbles in his mouth. Day after day, he goes to the beach, takes off his shoes, puts the pebbles in his mouth and practices speeches with a volume that challenges the ocean roar.

The purpose is freedom. When Demosthenes has to stand in front of a crowd, he has reached the freedom to speak clearly and audibly so the person in the back of the room can hear him clearly.

Discipline leads to freedom. Our aim is freedom not the discipline. Friend, what is your aim? Let me tell you what mine is: My aim is to reach my weight loss goal. So how do I apply this scenario of walking to the beach with pebbles in my pocket each morning? How do I speak with pebbles in my mouth?

In my case, I write down everything I eat in a food journal. I drink water (64 oz), I sleep 7 hours a night, I exercise. These are my disciplines. My goal is the freedom, not the specific things I just mentioned.

So how do we get to freedom? We have to show up at the beach each day. I want you to think about the freedom you want. It might be in the area of finances. It may be a spiritual discipline. It may be in your professional life. Whatever you choose, please take the time to think about what do you want.

What is your freedom? Then, I want you to imagine yourself as Demosthenes, going to the beach and taking his shoes off. What is your beach? That location for me, when it comes to the area of activity is my CrossFit box. I have to show up each day and train. In the area of food, I have to take my food journal seriously. I have to open it several times a day. I have to be honest about what I ate and how much I ate. That’s how I practically take my shoes off and show up.

Last but not least, what are your pebbles? Pebbles are not meant to be in the human mouth. They are dirty, they are uncomfortable. They are not chocolate, okay? But pebbles served a purpose of training Demosthenes to be a great orator. Friend, what are your pebbles?

In the food area, is the habit of honestly stopping to grab a pen and write down everything I eat. In the area of exercise, my pebble is the fact that everything in me wants me to stop or to go slow when I'm working out. When I decide to keep going faster until I’m done, the pebbles have served their purpose.

When it comes to sleep, my pebbles get in my mouth when I make a decision to stop everything I’m doing to go to bed at the correct time. I feel pebbles in my mouth when I set my alarm and put my phone away from me in the bathroom.

When I decide to go on to sleep and let everything else go out of my mind so I can rest and recover for another day. What is your pebble? Uncomfortable disciplines lead to great freedom. The goal is the freedom, not the discipline. The discipline will get you to freedom so don’t despise it. Do it with the freedom in mind.

From weight gain to weight loss

Saturday, January 22, 2022

Last week I had my first in-person weigh-in of the year. It wasn't pretty. After maintaining during thanksgiving and losing around Christmas time, the new year was filled with stressful situations. I did the best I could and went to the meeting. Last week I saw I gained 5 lbs. I left the meeting with a solid plan. I didn't like the gain but there was nothing I could do about the past. All I had was the future so I went to work. Here is what I did.

I planned for special days. I don't believe in cheat days. I do believe in special days. My wedding anniversary was Monday. We planned to bake an Italian Cream Cake. I added the recipe to my tracker. I tracked ahead. I enjoyed both baking and eating the cake. I didn't eat all of my dinner (a quinoa bowl) so I brought the rest of it home to be enjoyed the next day. Planning for special days work. I ended the week with a bunch of weeklies so I share a cupcake with my daughter. All foods are allowed at WW. The key is to plan for them.

I planned my weekly menu. I have the habit of writing a menu and developing a shopping list from there. I also plan to cook the foods I buy. Then, I pre-pack whatever I can for easy access. I want to say that I had 3-4 days of pre-made meals. They make eating healthy easy and delicious.

I planned to sleep the correct amount of hours. Sleeping well makes a difference because when I rest well I can exercise efficiently. My decision-making ability is high when I rest well. I feel much better when I rest well at night.

My WW coach said, "don't be in denial of your systems." This quote touched me so much because I felt like denial led me to that 5-pound gain. If I am to lose, I can't deny my systems. James Clear says "we don't rise to the level of our goals. We fall to the level of our systems."

My systems (most of them) were faulty for the first 3 weeks of the year. My coach's comment (You can’t deny your systems) led me to the following questions:

What are my systems? - Activity, Rest, Tracking, Water.
How do I implement my systems on a daily basis? I exercise 4-5 days a week; I rest 7 hours per night; I track most days; I drink 40-60 oz of water per day.
How do I strengthen the weak parts? Each week, I identify each of the 4 areas need improvement and I set a goal to improve them.
How do I uphold the strong parts? I celebrate the strong areas. I set goals to improve them too. I can't stop growing.

I experienced quite a bit of stress. The thing is, I can't control the source of stress nor change a lot of stressful situations. Still, I learned the following from my difficult weeks:

1. I can’t control the cause of my stress. I can control tracking, activity, water intake and sleep.
2. I can move the chocolate chips out of sight. They were completely out of mind once it was an inconvenience to grab them after dinner.
3. I can pre-pack my meals. Just 3 days does the trick. Most of all, don’t give up. Taking care of your health will make a difference. ❤️

All of this led to a 1.4 lb loss. I am excited about reaching my goal for the upcoming week and my overall goal to reach lifetime status at WW.

Thank you for reading!

New Year Old You

Sunday, January 2, 2022

Every year, I bring my old self to a new year. I bring my failures and mistakes. I certainly do it in the area of weight loss.

I was so stressed out between 2014 and 2016 that I gained all the weight I lost back. You can watch a video of how I lost 50 pounds here

I worked hard and lost 50 pounds by myself in 2014. I didn't have money to pay for a weight loss support group. I learned a lot from all the groups I belonged to in the past. I took that knowledge and applied it to my life. It worked. The knowledge I did not possess was how to successfully lose weight while managing stress.

I started my search for that knowledge. I mostly decided to try to lose weight by myself again. It was difficult. The one thing I kept telling myself was "do not give up." I also kept thinking that when I had a chance, I would go back to WW.

I'm a pastor's wife and I am a mother. I wanted to lose weight so I could serve God and my family more efficiently. I got back to WW and learned a lot of valuable lessons. They came slow but they did come.

I took possession of the knowledge and I continue to use it daily.

It is taking a long time but I am losing the weight I gained. The great news is, I haven't gained anything back since I started back in 2017.

I'm almost at my goal weight. The thing is, the old me has accompanied me to this year yet again. The good news is:

• I now know how to overcome barriers;
• I know how to keep my healthy habits even in the midst of busy seasons;
• I know how to manage stress without food;
• I am able to enjoy who I am and the body God gave me;
• I have the energy to care for my family;
• I feel healthy and energetic
• I have clarity of purpose;
• I am stronger than before;
• I enjoy helping others.

If you can use some encouragement in your journey, please join my HOPE Health Support Group on Facebook. It is a free group for people who are doing this without being part of a major group but would like some encouragement.

My plan is to continue to blog about my journey. If you have any specific questions or topic suggestons, feel free to reach out. Happy old you this new year!

My first Digital Vision Board

Monday, December 27, 2021

I have played around with vision boards (VBs) for a while. I can say that the goal, whether you believe in VBs or not, is to love the life you choose and while choosing a life you love.

Before vision boards were popular and parties were popping up everywhere, I designed my first vision board. You can see it and read all about it here.

What I didn't know then, was that life was going to be full of ups and downs. My VB was mostly weight and exercise-related. I honestly thought it was going to be a straight line to success.

The encouraging truth is that if you stick with the process, you will develop a deeper knowledge about yourself. You will not only get results but you will know how to make both strengths and weaknesses work for you.

I started my weight loss journey as a couch potato. I was as happy as I could be, I just wasn't very active. I also started my journey because of a health crisis. My blood pressure was dangerously high. My doctor told me to either change my lifestyle or I would likely die young. I chose to change.

Change is never easy or convenient but it is necessary. Instead of dreading change, I decided to embrace it with curiosity. I knew how to dread stuff too well. I dreaded all the new problems I had to solve. Embracing change with curiosity was exciting. It was also the positivity I needed to make all the work worthwhile.

I learned that there is joy and peace in taking care of my body and mind. I met new people along the way. I signed up with a health coach who taught me how to daily choose to eat the foods that would allow my body to work to its fullest potential.

She taught me how to make change easier and exciting. Each time I saw her, I learned something new. The first thing she taught me was to keep a record of everything that went into my mouth. She also taught me to challenge myself to eat more vegetables and fruits each week because the benefits are so great. The act of adding more nutrients to my plate helped me to establish the habit of being the person I set out to be: healthy and strong.

When I created my first vision board, I weighed 169 lbs and my BMI was 30.9. My goal was to have a normal BMI. I noticed my goal for 2011, the year I joined WW for the first time. My goal was to "exercise at least 4 times a week; Run three 5Ks; arrive at my goal weight; not get bored with food but plan my meals weekly." You can see a picture of my goal here

I'm amazed at how today, I am living that dream from 10 years ago. Except for my goal weight (I'm 6 lbs away!), I am living what I set out to do.

I created a digital vision board for 2022. The process was easy and empowering. I am fully excited about the process of achieving those goals.

I'm not sure if you are a believer or doubter when it comes to VBs. My take is: they do not hurt but help. The worst it can do is give you a little glimmer of hope so you can be positive to be the person you ultimately want to be.

Getting close to Goal

Saturday, December 18, 2021

I am seriously getting close to my goal weight. I need to tell you about my week first. It was stressful. It was very stressful. I did several things to manage.

1. Exercise. I decided to exercise as I always do. One day, I was actually afraid of a CrossFit workout but I showed up afraid. I hit a PR (personal record) that day. I learned that it's okay to show up afraid because you don't know what you are going to get unless you try. The weather guaranteed that I was flexible with my schedule. I often have 3 plans for exercising. I have a plan A and two backup plans if that first plan does not work. Exercise is so good for me that it is worth making it happen.

2. Food Prep. I haven't been able to plan my menu as I often do so I was flexible and planned my food in the middle of the week. A few months ago, I thought that if I didn't plan on Saturday, my week just was not going to go well. To my surprise, any planning is better than no planning. I cooked brown rice, black beans, sweet potatoes (baked), roasted brussell sprouts. My husband smoked salmon, which was so delicious! When I have food ready for the week, it is easier to have the strength to manage stress.

3. Sleep. One of the most overlooked stress management strategies is sleep. This week, sleeping helped me think better. It also helped me face my stressful situations with a more balanced mindset.

4. Eat the treats. There were a few treats that came to our house this week. To be fair, I also baked treats. I ate a few treats. My husband went out to celebrate his birthday and we also enjoyed our food. We ate stuff we often do not eat. I ordered a smaller portion and took a few bites of some of my favorite foods. I tracked as well as I could and I was happy to get back to my normal eating rhythm.

I honestly was afraid of going to the studio to weigh in. I thought my stressful week was going to show on the scale.

I woke up after a restful night and went on a run. Before going to the studio, I weigh in at home, just to see how I am doing.

I honestly weigh in most days of the week. Here's the thing: my scale is not working properly. It is between 5 or 6 lbs LIGHTER than the scale in the studio. I know. My scale is great for the ego but the true deal one is the WW scale.

It was raining cats and dogs but I decided to go in. Also, I'm not sure if I'll weigh in in-person again because of the holiday schedule so I was happily surprised to hear the scale was down 1.8 lbs!

This is my lowest weight in 16 years. I am so happy, excited and I was a little afraid. I think that sometimes when we get close to a finish line, we entertain feelings of fear. I didn't let those feelings stay for too long because I was just happy to lose weight after such a challenging week.

I'm 6 lbs away from my goal weight of 136 lbs. I know I will get there. I hope to get to Lifetime by January of 2022.

Here are a few words of encouragement:
• You can use what you have and still make progress. I started my journey using a pen and paper to track and whatever clothes and shoes I had to walk.
• You have to tell yourself not to give up. This is what I've been telling myself since I joined WW for the second time in 2017.
• Small steps count as progress. My journey has been slow. I'm okay with that. I'm learning so much.
• Not gaining weight is a victory too. Recently, maintaining weight felt like a victory. It shows that I am in control, I can enjoy foods and not let them take over my healthy habits
• I have what it takes to finish strong and so do you!

Slow weight loss progress

Tuesday, November 30, 2021

Sometimes, weight loss takes time. I struggled with my weight a lot but since I got married, I've been winning.

I didn't know that in my lifetime, my weight would fluctuate. I also didn't know what it took to live a healthy lifestyle. Once I got married, I decided to learn. These lessons came after I discovered I had high blood pressure.

Once I got my blood pressure under control, I continued my health journey. 2017 was the year I just couldn't get a hang of my weight. Stress was my problem. I was exercising habitually but the eating part was difficult for me. I told myself not to lose hope. I told myself, do what you can with what you have.

Once I went back to work, I joined WW. I was 175 lbs at the time. My most recent weight is 143. It took time to get to where I am. It's been painfully slow. I'm learning the following lessons:

Slow progress is still progress. My doctor told me that if I lose slow, chances are I will maintain the weight loss. She was correct. I haven't gained anything I lost since I started WW. I also had a chance to adapt to the weight loss. I'm a different person than I was in 2017. The slow process allowed me to fully be the healthy person I set out to be.

Slow loss is great for the mind. I am more compassionate thanks to this slow process. I accept failures are doorways to lessons. My mindset game is strong. I know exactly how I need to think in order to live the healthy life I want to have. I also learned that there's more to healthy living than calorie counting. Sleep counts. Mindset counts. Movement counts and journaling counts.

Slow progress helps the body. I'm stronger than before. It took learning from mistakes. It took giving up the good for the great. I allowed myself to change my approach to fitness, eating, and even drinking water. My body has responded well. I feel well and I am growing stronger, thanks be to God. There is no magic pill and I believe that progress is supposed to be slow. There is merit in showing up day after day and putting in the slow work. Looking back over years is the way to see progress.

I'm really close to reaching lifetime status at WW. I'm ready to get there. While I don't, I'm looking back with gratefulness for slow progress.

My slow progress

Saturday, November 13, 2021

Simplifying my goals paid off. I used to set lofty and high goals. In a way, I don't blame myself. I was taught by my parents and grandparents to soar high. I heard Zig Ziglar say that if you aim for nothing, you will hit it every time. So I wrote a lot of goals.

During that time, my family was growing. Life was happening and it was beautifully complex. I needed life to be simple so I could handle the complex aspects of my life. I saw my goals as both real and aspirational. The thing was, there was no way I could focus enough to get everything done.

My solution was to focus on the following categories: Faith, Family, Fitness, Business and Other. Faith has to do with my relationship with God as I pursue spiritual discipline. Family is focused on my marriage and parenting. Fitness is focused on nutrition and exercise. Bussiness is focused on my professional life. Other is the category I include everything that does not fit in these four.

When COVID-19 hit the US, everybody's goals had to adapt to the reality of the world. I decided that in order to thrive, I needed to choose what would benefit me the most. I knew I couldn't travel (although God blessed me to travel right before everything shut down) so there was no reason to pursue that goal. I decided to simplify even more. I learned that without health, I couldn't achieve anything on my list. Health became one of my top goals. I naturally leaned into spiritual discipline during that season and I tweaked my Family goals.

For the longest time, I have been trying to arrive at a normal BMI. This is year 4 of trying and I am finally ready to be there. I am so close.

While most people lose what I needed to lose in one year or less, I'm okay with 4. Why? The slow change has allowed the good habits to stay. I haven't gained any of the weight back. I haven't stopped trying to grow and learn. I am grateful.

Slow progress truly is progress. my doctor told me in 2012 that if I lost one pound per month, I'd lose 12 lbs per year. She said losing weight slowly was better. I subconsciously took her up on it and here I am, close to my goal.

I know what it feels like to think you can't lose weight. I know how you need to get healthier and you try but do not succeed on your own. I remember that I kept telling myself not to give up. I remember simply putting one foot in front of the other doing what I could with what I had.

I remember that when I first got interested in running, I had a used pair of shoes and a cotton t-shirt. I put on some sports-looking pants and I went for a walk. I remember writing "one day I'm going to run and enjoy it."

Here I am, 13 years later enjoying distance running and crossfit. It took small steps. It took not giving up. It also took not relying on anyone else for approval. God was for me and that was enough.

I hope that you do not give up on your goals. Simplify them if you must but remember that slow progress is still progress. You have what it takes.

My Weight Loss in 60 seconds

Monday, August 30, 2021

I'm still an active member of WW. My weigh-in days have switched a few times but currently, it is Saturday. I didn't know how to feel about a Saturday weigh-in day but now that's the option, I feel it works. It also helps me stay accountable during the weekends.
This week I did a lot of reflection. I took the time to reflect on Bible passages. I also reflected on my schedule. Last week, I learned that if I don't focus on my goals during the day, I truly can't reach them. I wrote down my goals and kept them in front of me. One of my health goals was to exercise 5 days this week. I was able to do it 6 times.

CrossFit was tough. I managed to finish the workouts and do my best. Most of the workouts required skills I haven't quite master. I was excited that I lost my fear of one of the exercises. I call it a win. I'm learning that in life, you have to show up, listen to instruction and do your best. I know if I keep working hard I will grow in skill and strength.
When life gives you milk... you make ice cream, right? Life is not always predictable, easy, or straight ahead. I took my little one to get ice cream. I enjoyed a small portion with her. We enjoyed our cold treats outside. It was nice to feel the breeze and to think thankful thoughts. God is good and I am grateful for all the blessings He gives us daily.
I have been training for a half marathon. I'm glad I kept my running base pretty much intact so we can build from here. The race is kind of far away but it will be here before we know it. Running is truly for joy. I know activity helps with weight loss but there is so much joy involved.

The above picture is my before picture. I'm sure there is a "before before" picture I could show you too. I was super excited, I just had delivered my second baby and I was ready to work on my health and strength. I joined Weight Watchers at the time and lost 31 lbs. Money was short, so I had to cancel my subscription. I kept everything I learned from them and finished losing  a little over 50 lbs right before I got pregnant with my third baby, which I delivered 22 months after i took this picture.

Again, I relied on the things I learned about myself and with WW to lost another 50 lbs by myself. I started training for marathons at that time. Slowly, my weight creped back up. I had the desire to join WW because I wanted their support and accountability.

Once I found a full-time job, I joined WW online November of 2017. It's taking this long to lose weight. I'm so close. The great news is that in 4 years, I haven't gained anything back.

I'm learning new skills. I'm enjoying this healthy lifestyle. I am enjoying the fact that I don't consider myself to be on a diet. I am living the life of freedom I want to live.

I will get there. One pound at a time, one decision at a time, one day at a time.
Thanks for your encouragement in this journey my friend!

Summer Health Project Finale

Lifting at CrossFit

Click to listen

I was gaining weight so I needed a new goal. I needed new encouragement so I started a summer health project. The project moved me in the right direction. When I started the project, I had a clear idea of where I needed to go. I also knew there would be barriers on the way there.

I faced the barriers, managed the challenges, and here I am. The summer is far from over but I challenged myself on purpose.

The challenge landed me in the busiest travel season for our family. I counted the cost: what if I succeed? What if I don't? If I do everything I am supposed to and still do not hit a weight loss goal, how should I think of this project? Here is what I learned:

I'm the only person who can stop me from reaching my goals. I also have more permission to succeed than I think I have. I know things happen but I can change my routines to fit my goals.

Support is necessary to succeed. I had support from the WW community both in-person and online. It was important to have someone to listen to me and encourage me to carry on. I also had a lot of support from my CrossFit and running friends. Motivation to do right is everything.

Gratitude was a key part of my journey. I am growing in gratitude. I am learning that being grateful helps me appreciate where I am on the way to where I am going. It fuels my journey because when I look back, I am grateful for the lessons learned. When I consider where I am, I am grateful for all the small steps that allowed me to enjoy this part of the journey. Gratitude is so good for the soul, it makes me want to continue to take great care of myself. I'm not sure why I would go on a health journey without it.

It takes effort to track. Tracking was my least favorite part of the process. I learned that making the effort to track means I will get results. I learned that I can make tracking fun. I also saw results every time I tracked. It started as dread turned to curiosity ending with good results. I'm not sure if you thought about the thing you dread may be the key to get results. You just need to make it interesting enough so you can keep doing it. Such is life, right?

Get comfortable being uncomfortable. The results I wanted were outside of my comfort zone. So I had to get used to being uncomfortable. The good thing is that once I brain adjusted to this new reality, I enjoyed life way more. For example, going to bed on time was slightly uncomfortable. I wanted to stay up with I knew that 7 hours of sleep was what I needed. My productivity, creativity and health depended on those 7 hours. So I went to bed on time. Each time I woke up feeling rested, life was pretty amazing. Training was great. Making good food choices was amazing. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable because change is the only way to succeed.

Because of my travel schedule and because my local WW closed the workshop I attended, I haven't been able to weigh in for a few weeks. I have been weighing in at home each week. My home scale says that I lost 5.8 lbs since June 3.

I'm happy with these results. I was going for more but if I count the amount of stress I had to manage plus all the change I am currently managing in my career, I'd say losing 5.8 lbs is pretty amazing.

Today I am starting a new weight loss cycle. I assessed my results since June 3. I am grateful for them. I am now focusing on finishing strong. I'm so close to my WW lifetime goal. I can't give up now.

Thanks for joining me in this journey and come back for the next phase!

Summer Health Project Week 4

Friday, July 2, 2021

The road to my goal is filled with obstacles. That, I know well. What I didn't know is that if I condition myself to make it through these obstacles, I win.

I can describe this past week as a challenging week. We worked long hours at work. When I work long hours, I get hungry and extra tired. Knowing this was the type of week ahead of me, I decided to condition myself to face this obstacle. The solution was to prep my food ahead of time.

Last weekend I prepped three days of lunches and dinners and I took them to work along with some quality snacks.

I challenged myself to actually eat the stuff I packed. There were days I thought about driving to the local bakery and eating something decadent. Then, I thought, the decadent dessert is not going to get me closer to my goal so Nope!

One day, I needed a little celebration and uplifting. I went out to lunch instead of eating what I took to work. I did choose a super healthy place (actually the local health food store). I chose a veggie-rich salad with hummus. It was great for my body and yes, it helped me get closer to my goal.

This morning, I had a little more time in my hands so I decided to go for a run after I finished my CrossFit workout. It was so good for me and it helped me get closer to my goal.

Looking at these stats below, you may think, boy she's not moving towards her goal fast enough. I'd agree with you it if wasn't for the obstacles I've faced. If it wasn't for the circumstances I face and my resolve to stay the course, I'd wish things were moving faster than they've been.

While I wish weight loss was magical fast and simple, it is not. I am determined to stay the course, face each obstacle and learn from this journey. Thanks for reading.

Summer Health Project Week 3

Sunday, June 27, 2021

Challenges appear each week. Some weeks are more stressful than others. There are times I am so busy, all I can do at the end of the day is to sleep heavily and start all over again the next day.

June is a festive month so we started the week celebrating Father's Day. We had a simple celebration at home. My husband and I had a salmon salad, the kids had fried chicken. It was good to sit down and honor Zeke for being a Godly, exemplary father.

I tell you about my family's schedule because they are my priority. My goal is to serve God and my family well. My health helps me to do all that more efficiently.

I drove the kids back and forth from camp quite a bit. There was one day, I stopped at a new Starbucks in town and got coffee. It was refreshing, just the pick me up I needed to help me with my day.

I reached my exercise goal for the week. I tracked everything I ate but I did not reach my goal of eating until I was lightly satisfied. I had homemade Indian food on Wednesday and I think that might have something to do with the results I got at my home scale. I weighed in at the exact same number as last week. I was happy about that but you know my official number comes from the WW Studio scale.

I usually wear the same thing every Thursday, except last Thursday. My outfit was dirty and I didn't have time to do laundry so I wore a different dress.

I went in to weigh in and I gained 0.2 lbs. I told my coach "I'll take it." I was okay, yet a little frustrated. I also know this journey is not about perfection. It is about doing your best each day as it comes.

I know I can easily lose those 0.2 lbs if I stay focused. So far, I had two days I went out and I ate things I usually don't eat. I tracked them the best I could.

I've been resting well, drinking water and exercising.

The upcoming week is super busy at work. I packed several days of lunches, dinners, and snacks and I took it to work. I am prepared to eat well and to fuel the amount of hard work that needs to be done.

I haven't given up on my goal. I can't give up. I am willing to offer self-compassion and understanding as I keep putting one foot in front of the other. Thanks for reading.

Here are the project stats*:

June 10 - 147.6
June 17 - 147.2

Summer Health Project Week 2

Friday, June 18, 2021

This past week was a celebration week at our home. My youngest daughter celebrated a birthday. When there are birthday celebrations, we eat things that we normally wouldn't.

I was able to enjoy the celebration and still remember my goals. I learned that each week, each day, each occasion requires a plan. My plan for the birthday was the following:
• Eat a lot of veggies when eating out. I ate steamed veggies for lunch, salmon and a salad for dinner. I did enjoy the dessert (ice cream cake).
My plan for the rest of the week was:
• Exercise 5 days - I was able to do that.
• Sleep at least 7 hours - this went really well.
• Manage stress - I was able to get some professional help in this area, which is always a plus. I also practiced what I preach.
• Prep my food - I prepped my breakfasts (overnight oats), which made life so much simpler.
• Tracked - I tracked daily, as best as I could.

When it was time to weigh in, I had my questions. I honestly thought I'd gain because of the celebrations of the week. I lost 0.4 lbs this week!

My goal for next week is to stay away from foods with added sugar. I also want to track, rest and maintain the right mindset about this project.

Here are the project stats*:

June 3 - 150. 2
June 10 - 147.6
June 17 - 147.2
