Loving Texas while missing North Carolina Autumns

Sunday, November 6, 2016

I love Texas for many reasons. I couldn't help but fall in love with the culture I experience here. Heat is part of Texas culture and I'm determined that tough summers build tough people. The scalding heat you feel when you walk out of your air conditioned car builds your possess. Walking outside to get your mail in the blazing sun affects your brain in a way that it increases your ability to live life better (away from the sun).

This time of year I dearly miss North Carolina. The golden, crimson colors of the changing leaves made me feel like I was inside of a postcard. I'd drive my old, straight shift car in those curvy roads. I often didn't have destination. My goal was to get lost in the beauty of God's handwork. That my friends, is the best time to look at the changing leaves.

When you move away from a place, it seems that the only thing you really take with you are those mental pictures. Hopefully, they are mostly happy. That's North Carolina in the Fall to me: beautiful mental pictures. I remember the leaves changing, the cooler air and the joy that this new season bring. The hope of Thanksgiving, the taste of holiday meals and the laughter with friends. Carolina in my Mind is the soundtrack of my Fall.

I open my eyes and I am right back in the heat of Texas. I've given birth in the heat of this summer. No wonder my child is fierce. I've suffered the effects of heat and humidity, and it made me wiser and stronger.

Still, I miss my Carolina Autumns. All I had to do was to look outside of my window where my older kids played and played in those golden leaves. I hope these memories will never fade away. For I am determined that this crazy love for Texas is here to stay. All while missing my North Carolina Autumn.

Reevaluating my Goals

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

I wanted to take advantage of being in the middle of the year to reevaluate my goals. I think that rewriting this letter could be beneficial:
My 2011 Letter
The idea is to write a letter the future you is writing to the current you. It lists the successes you are currently incorporating in your life, the changes you want to make in the future and the winning strategies that will help you make the changes. According to my original goal, I have 6 weeks to arrive at a BMI OF 24.9 or less. Sometimes I wonder if I can. Most times I am telling myself not to give up and keep pushing forward. I hope you have time to reevaluate your goals.
Action Items:
• Read your goals;
• Reevaluate them;
• Write down new Strategies to reach them.

How to Invest in your Marriage during Christmas

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Christmas can be a great time to invest in marriage. When I see the happiness this season brings, I am encouraged to remind my husband of how thankful I am for our marriage and the growth that happened in us this year. You can get very creative such as looking at old photos as well as creating new traditions between you and your spouse.

Looking at our past Christmases together can bring great inspiration. Remembering how Christmas used to be before kids is actually fun:
This is a photo of my first Christmas with Zeke. We were dating and when he gave me my first Christmas tree - among other awesome gifts.
When we got married in 2006, we kept celebrating the season. We always decorated our place with lights, a tree and we gave gifts to each other. We used to go to friend's homes to eat the Christmas meal, which was really enjoyable. Here's a photo of our Mississippi wedding - and yes, that chocolate cake tasted REALLY good!
We were also blessed to spend Christmas in Brasil before having kids. We went to Copacabana beach on Christmas day, which my husband really enjoyed. This photo is of another sunny beach in Cabo Frio. By going to Brasil he had a chance to see how I grew up celebrating the season.
I spent some Christmas holidays with his family as well and got to experience some of their traditions. No matter where we have been these past 9 years, we have been celebrating Christ with family. Here's our North Carolina home decorated for Christmas a few years ago.
Zeke and I always longed for a full house of our own for Christmas. God has blessed us with that this year. Today I am thinking that Christmas can't be all about the kids. As we celebrate Jesus the Savior, we thank God for the many blessings we enjoy such as our marriage.
I do believe that I can honor God by being appreciative of the gift He gave me in my husband. I believe that writing my husband a Christmas letter expressing my love and gratitude can be a great Christmas tradition. I challenge you to invest in your marriage this season, whether is through an extra date night or another creative way to remind your spouse that he or she is loved and treasured.
QUESTION • What is that one special Christmas tradition you have (or will start) that can strengthen your marriage?

The Life Impact of Letters

Monday, February 27, 2012

This month I've been following my own Mindful Challenge. In this challenge we are mindful to be a blessing to others (Galatians 6:10). I think that using our words wisely is one of the keys to be a blessing to others. When you use your words well, you release the power of life over someone (see Proverbs 18:21).
Yesterday I read on Twitter that when you update your status on Facebook, that might make an impact for 2 hours. Of course Twitter updates are quicker and the impact of the words released there, quite shallow. I believe in writing letters and cards because their impact is long lasting. You take the time to sit down and craft it with your own hands. You mean every word you put in there and this is exactly how the reader receives it. Words in paper last for a lifetime. While many of us can't remember what someone wrote on our Facebook wall yesterday, we tend to hold on to letters and the power of the words written there. Being mindful to spread the positive power of words through letters is an amazing way to be Mindful of others.
I challenge you to be mindful through the written word to 3 people this week. Let me know what impact it made in your life and theirs.

Carta

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Ja vi muita gente escrevendo cartas pros filhos e colocando no blog. Acho legal.

1Filho meu, não te esqueças da minha instrução, e o teu coração guarde os meus mandamentos;
paz. 3Não se afastem de ti a benignidade e a fidelidade; ata-as ao teu pescoço, escreve-as na tábua do teu coração;
endireitará as tuas veredas. 7Não sejas sábio a teus próprios olhos; teme ao Senhor e aparta-te do mal.
8Isso será saúde para a tua carne; e refrigério para os teus ossos. 9Honra ao Senhor com os teus bens, e com as primícias de toda a tua renda;
26Porque o Senhor será a tua
