“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”
Romans 13:14 ESV
Sometimes, right before I wake up, I hear a Bible verse in my spirit. This morning, I heard Romans 13:14. I went on to get dressed. It is cold in East Texas, so I had on three layers. I needed to put on extra layers to run outdoors.
I often think about what I am going to wear the night before. I put on forethought because it makes getting dressed while sleepy easier.
Today’s Bible verse tells us to put on the Lord Jesus Christ. The Greek word for “put on” means provision, forethought. The image is one of someone getting dressed.
I’m not sure about you but I always get dressed on purpose. I love to dress up. I usually don’t put on running clothes to go to work. It requires a different attire.
The Lord is encouraging me to put on the Lord Jesus Christ when I go about my daily life. I find that when I do, there is little room for complaining. I encourage you to read Colossians 3:1-17 today.
This chapter helps you to see what “putting on the Lord” actually means. It means that as I enter a room, I bring a compassionate heart, kindness, humility, meekness and patience. If someone tests my patience, I forgive them. See verse 13: “if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”
Kindness is not a political solution. It is the fruit of putting on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Here is what I am encouraging you to do. Ask yourself:
• How can I put on the Lord Jesus Christ today?
• Do I have a complaint about a person? How can I totally forgive them?
Prayer: Jesus, give me your compassionate heart, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Help me forgive those who hurt and upset me. I want to totally forgive (name of person) for (give details to God). I release myself from the bitterness and resentment that this matter caused. I commit myself to Your righteous and loving hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
