Dwell

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

I rely on the words of God and the songs of God to get me through difficult situations in life. A few years ago, my son received an unexpected medical diagnosis. We immediately took every precaution necessary. We relied on God for help. We also followed through with the recommendations the doctors gave us.

This past week, as we were driving to a follow-up doctor’s appointment, my heart was heavy. I was truly stressed out. What do you do when you can’t do what you normally would to relieve stress? You practice what Colossians 3:16 says.

The drive to the appointment was long. I thought, either I will listen to my audio Bible or I will listen to music. I chose African American Gospel music. The song lyrics reminded me of the greatness of God. It told me that God never fails us. The joyful spiritual songs revived my trust in God. We prayed as we arrived at the appointment, not knowing what to expect. I knew God would be with us, so we were thankful.

After we finished the x-ray, we went to see the doctor. He had great news. He also had a smile. He saw an improvement. No need for surgery. The joy in my heart was so big. I said with excitement: “This is a blessing!”

They said, yes, it is a blessing.

I’m not saying that listening to Gospel music for 2 hours leads to a positive medical diagnosis. I am saying that when the words and the songs of God dwell in us, we are more likely to tap into the thankfulness in our hearts.

The Bible is our go-to book for every season of life. If we are sad, we read it. If we are happy, we read it. The Bible is not optional, it is a necessity for daily life. God, in His infinite wisdom, has given us tools to manage our negative emotions. The words of Bible need to be our grounding force and our guiding force. Put a tune to it and you have a joyful combination.

I want to encourage you to make the words and the songs of the Lord part of your arsenal of daily encouragement.

God sees where you are. He knows what you go through. Let His words dwell in you richly. Richly means in good and bad times.

Prayer: Lord, I pray that I will choose the words of the Bible over any other earth words. I pray that I will allow Your words to dwell in me richly. I even pray for creative ways to do that. Your words give me life and they help me be grateful. You are good. Thank you in Jesus’ name, Amen.
